Dondondo

picture picture sound fragment

The dondondo or firikyiwa (Nketia 1957,p 197) is a metal bell that is worn over the middle finger and is struck with a metal ring worn around the thumb. The dondondo is sometimes described as a metal castanet (Nketia 1979 p.73). The sound is very clear and even drowns the drums. Among the Akan it is usually played by the women as a rhythmical support for their songs.

Among the Dagomba it is called fienga, among the Mamprusi feenga, among the Kusaal pirik and among the Sissala piisa.
