picture picture picture sound fragment sound fragment

The ompeh drum is an open single-headed conical drum made from one single piece of wood. The membrane is made of goat or antelope hide and fastened and tightened with braided ropes attached to 7 or 8 conical wooden pegs. It is approximately 50 cm high and has a diameter of 20 cm at the top and 18 cm at the bottom. This drum has a clear sound and plays ostinato figures and cross rhythms. The ompeh is played alternately with a wooden drumstick and the palms and accompanies traditional dances such as the ompeh dance of the Efutu.
