Pendere

The pendere is a closed pot-shaped gourd drum. The membrane, which is goat hide, is stretched over the opening of the gourd and tightened by means of ropes and tongues. The pendere has a diameter of 50 cm and a depth of 30 cm. Its soft sound makes the pendere an excellent accompaniment to the xylophone. It is played with both hands and the membrane can be struck with the finger-tips or the palms of the hand, producing different timbres. The Kassena have a similar drum, which they call kori.
